Both in Armenia and Eastern Europe civil society organizations (CSO) believe that the key pre-condition for development is financial sustainability. In some Eastern European countries where the development process has been crowned with success, the main contributing factor has been the fact that the respective governments have been able to secure sustainable income sources for the CSOs. In general, the international experience shows that there are three major local income sources for funding CSO activities: private donations and/or charity, state funding, and CSOs' own income sources, including membership and service fees, and investment of CSO funds in various institutional forms.

When facing a new challenge, a youngster tends to invent a bicycle. In contrast, a wiser adult, who has already had enough time to find out the advantages of all kinds of bicycles, starts to put those together to construct the means of transportation that serves his purpose the best. The Republic of Armenia is not an experimenting youth anymore, who desperately tries to boost his self-confidence, but an established state that tries to ensure affluent and respectful life for its citizens and develop civil society.

Democratization process in Armenia is marked with clear phases of social transformation, specifically review of Soviet legacy, introduction of western values and institutes, and finally, formation of local values and institutions in the result of the clash of the previous processes. Our society is stepping into yet another transformation phase: the chaotic logic of evolvement is to be replaced by the imperative of development, which requires a qualitatively different environment and toolbox of policy, regulation and intervention.

Nowadays the development level of the civil society in transitional democracies is measured by the number of non-governmental organizations (NGO). According to this measurement the institutionalization of the civil society in Armenia - a country with a population of three million and 5000 registered non-governmental organizations - may be considered a fact. It will be difficult to challenge this statement, taking into account the activities of the civil society organizations (CSO) for the last years, among which the most telling achievement was prevention of the ratification of the recommended amendments to the Law on Non-Governmental Organizations.

Both on the political agenda of the Republic of Armenia (RA) and in the dreams and concerns of every individual Armenian the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh (NKR) stands out as primary. We often try to provide assistance believing that this or that issue is important. We also think that in future our assistance, investment and our money will be a sufficient lever by themselves for achieving our aspirations. Such assistance is a necessary though not a sufficient condition. It is necessary to lay a foundation, which will direct the development of the NKR into a self-sustainable and independent path, will accelerate the pace of development and will multiply the efforts made.

“Green light” for environmentally neutral business development from Lisbon to Vladivostok

On March 3, 2021, the first meeting of the GreenDeal Task Force created under the Initiative Lisbon-Vladivostok was held. In the videoconference format, more than twenty authoritative experts in the field of ecology and business from Austria, Armenia, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Russia, France, as well as the representatives of the largest business industry associations supporting the Initiative Lisbon-Vladivostok, discussed common approaches to harmonizing the activities implemented by the EU and the EAEU on the path to sustainable development, including a radical reduction in greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere by 2050.
