The South Caucasus is often depicted as the main doorway to the energy rich Caspian region in the energy security narratives of the European Union and of other Western actors in the region. But what are the views from the South Caucasus countries Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia concerning their own energy security? This CASCADE working paper seeks to shed light on energy security notions from South Caucasus governments and energy companies, as well as of citizens and consumers. It finds that there are significant differences in the perceptions of the different actors in the energy sector within each South Caucasus country that could lead to political conflicts over energy security strategies.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has been granted the mandate to provide international protection to refugees and to assist states in finding durable solutions for them. This mandate, which has been expanded over time to include efforts serving the protection of other displaced populations and the prevention and reduction of statelessness has many dimensions which all relate to a common goal, namely the enhancement of the respect for and the protection and fulfilment of the rights of persons of concern. In pursuing its work UNHCR follows a human rights based and an “age, gender and diversity sensitive” approach.

This report offers a snapshot of the travel routes taken by two hundred families, their livelihoods, access to services, the schooling of children, and the protection risks women in Syria and Armenia formerly and currently face.

“Green light” for environmentally neutral business development from Lisbon to Vladivostok

On March 3, 2021, the first meeting of the GreenDeal Task Force created under the Initiative Lisbon-Vladivostok was held. In the videoconference format, more than twenty authoritative experts in the field of ecology and business from Austria, Armenia, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Russia, France, as well as the representatives of the largest business industry associations supporting the Initiative Lisbon-Vladivostok, discussed common approaches to harmonizing the activities implemented by the EU and the EAEU on the path to sustainable development, including a radical reduction in greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere by 2050.
